About The Opera Foundation
The Opera Foundation for young Australians is a not-for-profit arts organisation that has supported the professional development and pursuit of excellence for young Australians in the field of opera for the past 52 years.
It was founded by Lady Mary Fairfax AC OBE in 1963 who saw an opportunity to help and inspire young Australian opera artists by providing ‘make or break’ learning opportunities in the best opera houses and centres around the world.
A reason for being which is as relevant today as what it was at inception.
What continues to make the foundation unique is it opens doors to the world of opera for singers, conductors, directors, designers and repetiteurs.
Touches more parts of the operatic art form and recognises it’s true collaborative nature.
The foundation holds national auditions every year and is open to young Australians from all backgrounds.
Winners develop the professional skills required to succeed in the competitive world of opera today – vocal, acting & performance – and are cared for every step of the way.
They often return to the Australian stage to maintain and raise the standard of opera in our own country.
